Vinification
Garrafeira is a traditional Portuguese category for wines with long ageing: a minimum of two years in barrel and one year in bottle for reds. Baga from Bairrada is one of the most tannic and acidic grapes of Portugal, and by 1998 the wine has undergone significant evolution that softens the structure. Caves Messias keeps to a classic Bairrada style without nodding to modern taste.
Winery Story
Caves Messias is one of Portugal's oldest wine companies, founded in 1926 in Bussaco at the heart of the Bairrada region. The company specialises in traditional sparkling and still wines from Bairrada, carefully preserving the classic style of the region. Their Garrafeira is the flagship range that reflects long years of ageing and the terroir.
Vineyard Story
Bairrada lies in central Portugal, between the Atlantic and the Buçaco mountain. The region's clay and limestone soils are ideal for the Baga grape, lending the wines pronounced minerality and high acidity. Atlantic influence provides a cool climate that supports slow ripening and the preservation of freshness.
