Vinification
The Montevertine cuvée is the estate's flagship wine, made from a blend of Sangiovese with small additions of Canaiolo and Colorino, grown on historic vineyards in Radda-in-Chianti. Winemaking is minimalist: fermentation in open vats, ageing in large oak casks — botti — without an emphasis on new oak. The aim is to convey the living, elegant character of the Chianti Classico terroir outside the DOC label.
Winery Story
Montevertine is a legendary estate in Radda-in-Chianti, founded by Sergio Manetti in 1967. After a conflict with the Chianti Classico Consorzio the estate voluntarily dropped the appellation and began releasing wines as IGT Toscana, becoming one of the symbols of 'Super-Chianti' and independent Tuscan winemaking. Today the estate is run by the founder's son Martino Manetti, who preserves his father's philosophy.
Vineyard Story
Montevertine's vineyards lie at around 400 metres above sea level in the commune of Radda-in-Chianti — the coolest and highest part of Chianti Classico. The soils are galestro — the typical Tuscan schist that lends the wines minerality, freshness and a characteristic acidity. The vines are old, providing concentration and depth at a moderate alcohol level.
